The Curve, Video’s Super 8, 2014 – When Syfy debuted its made-for-TV movie Sharknado, the network had no reason to believe that it would stand out more than any of its previous over-the-top animal-monster-disaster originals (highlights from the last couple of years include Sharktopus, Dinoshark, and Piranhaconda). But for whatever reason—call it a zeitgeist moment, the perfect storm of Tara Reid/Ian Ziering–nostalgia-meets-global warming-fueled weather anxiety—Sharknado became a virtual feeding frenzy on Twitter, racking up 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak (with comments from Mia Farrow and the mayor of Los Angeles among them) to become the network’s most social telecast ever.
